Verizon, Skype Fix Wi-Fi Bug In 'Exclusive' Client Android users can now turn Wi-Fi on while using Skype over 3G... Verizon's "exclusive" agreement with Skype has created a Skype client that has a number of quirky restrictions -- including the fact that it eats your wireless minutes in some instances (conveniently keeping voice minutes relevant in the age of smartphone mobile VoIP). But Skype's specialized Verizon application also had a fairly nasty bug: Android users who used the Skype app over 3G couldn't turn on Wi-Fi -- at all. In other words, they couldn't use Skype on 3G and browse the Internet via Wi-Fi. At the time, Verizon gave a roundabout explanation, admitting there was a bug, but also insisting that CALEA wiretap restrictions were partially to blame for the problem, as the Verizon-specific app runs over Verizon's traditional voice network. Whatever the cause, Verizon and Skype have apparently figured it out, and Skype for Verizon smartphones now works with Wi-Fi turned on.

If you use skype to call landlines or international numbers you get charged.
I think this app works great, my wife uses it often to call her mother overseas and it works perfectly.
I actually preffer it using the voice network, this way the connection is more consistent and audio quality is great.
plus i can manage it like a regular phone call, so i even did a 3 way call with me on my Droid, her mom on the skype call and i joined my wife to the conversation via her regular cell phone!! try doing that with regular IP skype.

Oh, right... | |

Oh, right... Because people would not buy a data plan anymore. VOIP is the future for cell phones. The sooner verizon and google realize that the better. -- I found the key to success but somebody changed the lock.

| | Blame CALEA? "CALEA wiretap restrictions were partially to blame for the problem"
Bullshit. | |
| | | | Re: Blame CALEA? BS. Never been a problem for Skype especially on the Windows Mobile clients of full, unencumbered, functionality. | |
